Event Details

Come to see the latest and the greatest of the therapeutic underwater photography program, Under the Surface.

The Great Lakes Aquarium is hosting the Under the Surface exhibition through January.

For the young artists featured in this exhibition, water is medicine. They created their art through a therapeutic nature photography program at Northwest Passage, a residential mental health treatment center in northwest Wisconsin.

Under the Surface is the only program of its kind in the world. Program leaders blend intensive photography and water skills training with therapeutic mentorship. Our region’s lakes and rivers supply the inspirations. The resulting art represents a new view of beauty rarely seen, both in our waters and in the human spirit. This exhibition is a sample of photographs that have been featured in books, magazines, and exhibitions around the United States.

Under the Surface is a partnership between Northwest Passage and research diver and ecologist Dr. Toben LaFrancois of Northland College. The program is funded by Wisconsin Sea Grant, the National Park Service, and numerous generous individuals.
