SUMMARY:"Blueberries on the Barrens" Picnic at the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area
DESCRIPTION:Blueberry Picnic Saturday July 19 at the Namekagon Barrens \nFriends of the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area and the Wisconsin Sharp-tailed Grouse Society are hosting their 10th Annual “Blueberries on the Barrens” picnic for members\, neighbors\, and the public.  The event includes presentations starting at 10:30 a.m.; a silent auction; displays; door prizes; and a free-will donation lunch of brats\, burgers\, and beverages at noon. \nAnyone interested in picking wild blueberries can pick up a map to potential hot spots starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Namekagon Barrens picnic shelter and cabin (located in northeastern Burnett County at 33174 Gomulak Fire Lane\, Danbury).  Friends group members will be at the Cabin site to provide maps and directions to nearby wild berry patches.  Keep in mind that blueberries are very weather dependent and abundance can vary substantially from year to year.  Prime picking spots also change from one season to the next. \nA program will start at 10:30 a.m. with presentations on Moths and Butterflies of the Barrens\, Sharp-tailed Grouse management updates\, and a report on the Barrens’ Bluebird nest box success this summer. \nCome for a fun time and a chance to see the beauty of the Barrens\, as many wildflowers are in bloom. Scouting for blueberries will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Namekagon Barrens picnic shelter and cabin (located in northeastern Burnett County at 33174 Gomulak Fire Lane\, Danbury). Friends group members will be there to provide maps and directions to nearby wild berry patches. \nBecause of dry weather this spring\, there are some berries\, but likely not as plentiful as in recent years.\nKeep in mind that blueberries are very weather dependent and abundance can vary substantially from year to year. \nA program will start at 11 a.m.\, followed by a free-will donation lunch with burgers\, brats and beverages. The program will include presentations on the Northwest Sands Auto Tour\, Board Member Dave Peters’ recently-released book about the Barrens titled “Sand and Fire\,” and DNR representatives speaking about management for Sharp-tailed Grouse and barrens habitat. There will also be displays\, door prizes\, and a silent action. \nCome for a fun time and a chance to see the beauty of the Barrens as many wildflowers are in bloom.
